Alia Shour

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Alia, I am 19 years old. I grew up in the Gambia in West Africa and moved to Manchester 4 years ago to further my education, I now study law at the University of Leeds. I take part in volunteering activities and advocacy roles alongside my studies and hope to become a human rights barrister one day.

What motivated you to apply for your course at Leeds?

I wanted to become a lawyer because growing up in a third world country in where basic human rights were ignored and breached, I was exposed to people suffering and poverty in all aspects of everyday life. I wanted the knowledge and power to be able to help people and to me that came through acquiring a law degree. I chose the University of Leeds as it was the only university where I felt immediately at home and safe, the professors were enthusiastic and supportive and the environment was welcoming and conducive.

What did you think of your course?

My course has been taught better than I could have hoped, it’s a tough course and there have been hiccups along the way but I’ve been guided and supported throughout. There are many great aspects of my course, but the best would be criminal law, due to the amazing professors and their energy and enthusiasm.

How would you describe the guidance you've received?

The help and guidance received has allowed me to develop my skills and nurture myself, it hasn’t been hands on but has allowed personal development and independence which I feel is very important to have as a university student.

How would you describe the facilities at the University?

The facilities are second to none, the state of the art gym, all the libraries and the school of law, everything has been outstanding. There is everything you would need to do well and a fantastic student union which converts into a mini-town which is very cool.

Have you been involved in any extra-curricular activities?

I’ve joined the Law society and a volunteering society called Action. I am a project co-ordinator for Action. My partner and I run events weekly with an old people’s home in Leeds. Being able to volunteer was very important to me and Action have supported me throughout to run a successful program this year.
