- Course: BA (Hons) English, Language and Education
Please tell us a bit about yourself and your background.
I’m Laura, I’m 19 years old and I originally come from Durham. I’m currently a first year student studying BA English, Language and Education. I came to University straight after sitting my A-levels in English Language, Literature and Geography.
What motivated you to apply to study your chosen course and why did you chose Leeds?
As soon as I came to Leeds on an open day I knew the University was for me. Leeds is very much a student orientated city with multiple surrounding colleges and universities, and I loved the vibrant and exciting feel of the city, especially the University of Leeds campus. There is always something going on in Leeds, whether it is on campus or in the city centre which is within walking distance.
I discovered my course when I was entered into clearing and was immediately drawn to the fact that it was extremely practical as it could help me become a TEFL teacher. This is the perfect career for me as I have a desire to travel.
What do you think of your course, have there been any particular highlights for you?
I really love the course I am doing at the moment. We are taught by lecturers who are at the forefront of their field, and it is really exciting to me that we study the books they have written. I find the content of the course really interesting, and I love how our marks are based on assessments, rather than exams, which is more suited towards my learning style. I would say the highlight of my course has been studying Spanish from a beginners level. The class is quite small which means we get to interact a lot and we really get the most out of each session.
How would you describe the help and guidance provided by the staff within the School?
All the staff I have encountered so far at the School of Education have been so friendly and helpful. If ever I have a quick question or issue, I feel very comfortable emailing them knowing I will have a reply as soon as they can get to it. Part of the team whom I am particularly grateful for is my personal tutor, who I meet with every term to discuss my academic progress as well as any other questions regarding general University life that I may have.
How would you describe the facilities at the University?
The campus has everything you could want or need; there is even a dentist and a hairdresser downstairs in the Union! The multiple libraries at University can be quite daunting at first, but once you are taught how to use the machines, it is really very simple. Another facility which I find really useful is the Edge gym, especially because freshers get a free membership! Finally, there is lots of student support available when it comes to careers and building a CV, including the career centre, Leeds for life and job link. Using these tools has already helped me gain some work experience and increase my chances of employability when I graduate.
Have you had the opportunity to study abroad, or complete a year in industry?
I am only in first year so have not had this opportunity yet, but hope to study abroad (perhaps with the British Council or ERASMUS) when I get the chance in second year.
Have you been involved in extra-curricular activities?
I am part of the English society and have been to a couple of the socials this year which has been really fun and has been a great chance to meet new people. I am going to Prague with the society in a couple of weeks which I’m really excited about! In addition, with the RAG society, I have signed up to travel to Peru in the summer to work with a charity (SKIP) teaching English in schools.
