Ni Made Christina Wijaya, MA TESOL and IT student

Ni Made Christina Wijaya

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, I am Christina Wijaya from Bali, Indonesia. My bachelor’s degree was in English education, then I worked as a Design and Technology teacher for secondary level at an international school in Bali for three years. Also, I used to actively volunteer in some non-profit NGOs, including holding various youth empowerment programmes, helping a local sea turtle conservation and being a voluntary English teacher at several schools in rural areas. Besides teaching, I also enjoy travelling. Thus, since moving to Leeds, I spend most of my weekends/breaks travelling around the United Kingdom, exploring the beauty of this country and sometimes I get involved in volunteering too.

What motivated you to apply for your course at Leeds?

My background in English and working experience in ICT motivate me to enhance my knowledge and skill in these fields by pursuing postgraduate study abroad. And I noticed that the University of Leeds offered the most suitable major with high reputation and rank, thus I took MA TESOL and ICT. University of Leeds provides a meaningful and interesting learning experience with professional teaching staff, comprehensive modules and wonderful campus with its supporting facilities.

What makes you passionate about your area of study?

In this 21st century era, I believe that technology integration within education, including language teaching is essential. With the rapid development of technology, I believe students could learn even better with the support of technology. Therefore, I wanted to gain more insight and depth comprehension in this field. Upon return to my home country, Indonesia, with knowledge and skills I am acquiring here, I hope I can be a better educator for my students, colleagues and others.

What do you think of your course so far?

I have completely enjoyed my MA study at the University of Leeds. All modules that I have enrolled are profound and are very useful for my future career. Besides, I also joined a hybrid and fully online course module this semester which has offered me a new experience and has been very engaging. All lecturers are very supportive, professional and inspiring us to be more critical. It is definitely a worthwhile learning experience!

What do you think of the facilities?

The University of Leeds and School of Education provide great facilities in many aspects. The libraries, in particular, are completed with cutting-edge tech tools that make us easier to access, borrow and returns books, print and copy papers, as well as provide private or group discussion area that are very helpful for students’ different needs.

How would you describe the guidance you've received?

Our school counsellor is very supportive. Students always get recent updates about well-being programmes, educational conferences information, and openness to ask for suggestions not only academic but also personal issues. Besides, we could also ask for support in the LUU office and the staff are very helpful as well.

Have you been involved in any extra-curricular activities?

The University of Leeds offers various activities which could accommodate any kind of students’ positive interests. There are various clubs that students could try from sports and adventures, academics (e.g language club, debate, etc), arts, and many more. At the School of Education, there are also discussion forums that I joined, such as TESOL Forum which focuses on topics in English teaching and learning. It is an open seminar where the speakers are mostly lecturers in TESOL programmes and sometimes guest speakers from other universities. I also joined and have presented at the Education Discussion Group, a general discussion forum which brings different topics about education around the world.

What would you say about Leeds as a city?

Leeds definitely is a vibrant and multicultural city that suits for student life. Located in West Yorkshire, it is a comfortable city to live in and to experience the British life (and its Yorkshire accent!). The living cost is also reasonable compared to other big cities in the UK. The location is pretty strategic, thus, if you love to travel, Leeds could be a good base to explore around.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying?

TESOL and ICT is a great major and I believe that this field will be required a lot to fit the 21st century teaching and learning demand, particularly in English subject. The modules offered are comprehensive and applicable for your future career. Additionally, the lecturers are professional, supportive in helping you to perform better and certainly experts in their fields. It is a great subject for you who are interested in English and ICT integration.

What do you plan to do once you’ve finished your course?

I’ve planned to return to my home country and start my own learning centre in my hometown, Bali, Indonesia. I realise this will be very challenging, however, I am determined in providing a better education for the young generation and to apply my knowledge and skills acquired at the University of Leeds. Wish me luck!
