In Sub-Saharan Africa, the British Council is seeking to offer teachers of English enhanced access to development opportunities, particularly where geographical, economic or other circumstances limit teachers' access to more contemporary forms of teacher learning such as face-to-face training courses, multimedia course books, and web-based support. In line with this strategic goal, Teaching English Radio (TER), a teacher development package consisting of 12 15-minute audio programmes, was recently produced. It has been broadcast on radio in some African contexts and will be available via radio in an increasing number of African nations. The objectives of this study are:
- To examine the views held by teachers of English in a range of Sub-Sahara African contexts about the value of TER as a teacher development resource;
- To study these teachers' engagement with TER over time and in particular to explore the impact of the programmes on their knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and practices.
