Please tell us a bit about yourself and your background.
I’m outgoing, hardworking and have a heart for vulnerable people in society. I come from a supportive family and have a wide network of friends. My hobbies range from diving, mountain climbing and going on nights out, to binge watching Netflix and eating a whole pizza to myself. I do a lot of volunteer work, both in Leeds and back home, and have two jobs to support myself through university.
What motivated you to apply to study your chosen course and why did you chose Leeds?
Human trafficking was brought to my attention when I was in college, I was appalled by some of the crimes people commit and wanted to study a degree that would further my understanding in how to prevent such crimes. The course opened up a range of job opportunities to me, I found myself interested in areas of criminal justice I never thought I would involve myself in. I’ve always been determined and career driven. After college I came straight to University from South Manchester; I wanted to move far enough away that I could be independent yet close enough that I could still send laundry home!
What do you think of your course, have there been any particular highlights for you?
The course society, CrimSoc, has been a particular highlight. Being a part of a society with people interested in the same things as you, organising prison visits, socials and even a Summer Ball with the lecturers in June. Another highlight is the wide range of opportunities available, employers coming to deliver talks and advice on job applications. Also, how interesting and varied the course content is has kept me engaged.
How would you describe the help and guidance provided by the staff within the School?
Lecturers are approachable and extremely helpful, they often attend CrimSoc socials and always reply to emails. There’s mutual respect and the staff’s main priority is that students achieve the best to their ability. There is also extensive pastoral care available.
How would you describe the facilities at the University?
You will want for nothing at the University of Leeds.
Have you been involved in extra-curricular activities, such as societies, summer placements etc?
I have been involved with CrimSoc since starting at the University and in third year was awarded the position of Treasurer. A small team of us worked on organising the CrimSoc Summer Ball and I am responsible for the finances of the society. In third year I also joined the Henna Society.
