Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Originally from Chesterfield, but living and working in Leeds since 1993. Graduated in Philosophy & Psychology from Warwick University and obtained an MA in Public & Social Administration from Brunel University. Worked for 38 years in the civil service, but now partially retired.

What made you want to apply to your course at Leeds?

Being partially retired, I was looking for something a little challenging to keep me ‘occupied’ in the days I am not working. Leeds University has a strong academic reputation and the course content provoked my interest. And, being based in Leeds, part-time study and travelling were both viable.

What is it that makes you passionate about your area of study?

I did also consider an MA in Philosophy, but the Security, Terrorism and Insurgency course offered the opportunity to widen my areas of academic experience, providing a greater understanding of terrorism, in particular, beyond the generally value-laden judgements of the media. Having lived through both the Western European terrorism of the late 20th century and more recent terrorist movements, this is an area that has personal resonance and I leapt at the opportunity to study it academically.

What do you think of your course so far?

Very pleased. It has lived up to all expectations. In many ways, it would be unfair to single out individual aspects of the course because the content and teaching in all modules (Terrorism, Insurgency & Global Justice) has been uniformly excellent.

What would you say about the learning facilities?

The teaching has been excellent, with highly approachable and helpful teaching staff. Module information, method of assessment details and reading lists are made available in good time, and library facilities, particularly access to electronic journal articles are also first rate.

What do you think about Leeds as a city?

Leeds is an excellent place to study. It is culturally exciting with strong road and rail links to other parts of the UK, and air travel to Europe. And I say that as a Leeds resident of over 25 years.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?

I have completed only the first year of the 2-year part-time course, but would strongly recommend it. Beyond the 2 compulsory modules, there is a wide range of optional modules, allowing students to select areas of study of particular interest to them personally. When adding in the high quality of teaching, application to this course  is a very attractive option.

What do you plan to do once you’ve finished your course?

I am very much towards the end of my civil service career, and studying solely because of my interest in the subject area.
