Climate Week 2025 in the School of Education

Climate Week is taking place at the University of Leeds between the 24-28 March.

To celebrate Climate Week, we would like to highlight just some of the work which has been done within the School of Education on Climate Education and awareness.

Teaching climate change

Professor Vanessa Kind and Dr Syafiq Mat Noor conducted a practical session with students on modelling the greenhouse effect, providing a hands-on demonstration of the processes involved in greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. This was part of a new module, EDUC5009M Climate Change and Sustainability Education for MA Education.

The students conducted science experiments where they were able to observe a model of the greenhouse effect and learn about the role of carbon dioxide.

Poster presentation

In January students studying MA Education had an opportunity to showcase their work in a poster presentation for the Climate Change and Sustainability Education module.

The first group’s project was titled ‘Demonstrating the Greenhouse Effect: A Hands-On Learning Experience’, while the second group presented ‘Exploring Interdisciplinary Sustainable Waste Practices for Primary Education Using Virtual Reality (VR)’.

Ilkley Moor

MA Education students went on a field trip to Ilkley Moor where they were able to see first-hand the peatlands and run experiments in order to learn firsthand why peatlands are so critical in the ongoing battle against climate change, including gauging the depth of the peat, and measuring water levels.

In school sessions

Dr Indira Banner and Dr Syafiq Mat Noor presented at the ASE conference on evidence-based climate change teaching materials, discussing work they had conducted running sessions supporting secondary school science teachers in the delivery of climate change education.
