Students create collaborative zine to celebrate Black History Month 2025

To celebrate Black History Month 2025, students from the schools of Education, Law, Politics and International Studies, and Sociology and Social Policy were invited to participate in a zine workshop.

The workshop, which took place on Wednesday 22 October 2025, was organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences and was hosted by Dr James Greenwood-Reeves (School of Law) and Haworth Towler (Library Services).

At the workshop, James and Haworth provided context and materials relating to this year's Black History Month theme, 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride', and offered guidance and assistance on zine-making processes and techniques. Students were also encouraged to bring their own materials.

What is a zine?

"Zines" are informal magazines, made by members of the public, often using everyday materials and cuttings from newspapers and magazines. They've been very popular with marginalised groups, as an accessible and effective way of telling stories and seeking advocacy outside of mainstream publishing.

At the 2-hour workshop, students crafted their individual pages which, at the end of the session, were collated and scanned to create a whole zine.

A digital version of the zine created by students at the workshop is available to view and download through this link.

A printable version – for anyone wanting to print out the zine into a physical copy, is also available to view and download through this link.
