Rochelle Nazareth, LLM International Banking and Finance Law

Rochelle Nazareth

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am originally from India but spent most of my life in the United Arab Emirates. I decided to pursue my undergraduate studies in India where I majored in Finance and Accounts while simultaneously pursuing a professional qualification (ACCA, UK).

What motivated you to apply for your course at Leeds?

During my undergraduate degree I developed a keen interest in business and finance and wondered how laws affect a country's economy. I find the subject of law fascinating, which is probably spurned by legal shows - one of my favourite shows is Suits.

Deciding on a college was quite hard considering the multitude of options. My main source of information came from extensively reviewing university websites to find the right fit. I wanted to be in a city where I could fit in and be comfortable. Leeds appeared to offer plenty of opportunities, a wide variety of nationalities, a beautiful countryside with pretty great weather as well (witnessed my first snowfall here), lots of friendly and helpful people and so much more.

What makes you passionate about your area of study?

With the rapid evolution in finance and commerce, my spark of interest in finance soon turned into a flame and ignited my passion to help individuals and organisation make the right business decisions. I want to start my career in audit as I feel that this will help me understand the various aspects and the mechanisms of the busines model, as well as guide me to analyse risks. Having an understanding of law and finance will enable me to advise people on how to maximise their benefits and provide soltions to their specific problems.

What do you think of your course?

I can say with utmost confidence that I am definitely enjoying all that my course has to offer. It was a little difficult initially. I wasn't used to reading huge amounts of information with no numerical application. But I gradually got the hang of it and I must say it is amazing the role that law plays in the world of business and finance. Law has definitely widened my understanding of the finer aspects of a business.

Our professors are so enthusiastic about the subjects they teach and that a student’s feedback and interaction is always welcomed positively. The atmosphere is electric and makes you want to come to uni every day, even if it’s just to socialise!

I am eagerly looking forward to writing my dissertation as it is an area I'm very interested in and I know that I am going to learn so many things and it can only prove beneficial for me.

What do you think of the facilities?

The range of books and resources available is simply phenomenal. The libraries are really great, but if you prefer to work from home a huge chunk of resources are also accessable off campus. The sessions on essays, research technique, job interviews, and dissertations are a great opportunity, especially for students who have never been exposed to these kind of assessments before.

What would you say about Leeds as a city?

I have thoroughly enjoyed living here. The Yorkshire countryside takes my breath away every single time! I like the fact that people are really friendly in Leeds and that because there is a large student population there are plenty of events always being held. During Christmas time I loved the lights being switched on as well as the markets that were set up later on. Then the fireworks and bonfire nights was another fun filled event. Overall, it is safe to say that I have loved this city and I would love to live here if given the choice.

What do you like to do outside of studying?

I am a foodie! I spend so much time looking up recipes and trying them out that sometimes I wonder why I did not become a chef! Fortunately, my flatmates love food and sweets as much as I do and so we make it a point to go out for a meal at least once a week and try out a new place. There are a lot of places here that give great student discounts and offers which fit perfectly within a student’s budget. I spend time travelling as well and I think it’s great that the university organises so many trips to such a variety of places. I find the various classes held at the gym fun to attend as well be it Zumba or pilates or even just a swim!

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?

I’d say hurry up before the admissions close. It is an opportunity that cannot be missed and a decision that will not be regretted. The program is so vibrant and offers a lot of flexibility. Even if you think that your undergraduate degree is not relevant but you are interested in this area, go ahead and apply. If you get in, you will surely love every minute!

What are your plans for the future?

I wanted to get into Audit and then move on into consultancy. I have been fortunate enough to get into KPMG, Leeds through the graduate recruitment process for Audit. So I guess I’m on my way to achieving my goal. I don’t know as yet if I intend to write the bar exam at this point but maybe sometime in the future I will consider it. For now, I’m grateful for having the opportunity to continue out here in Leeds and look forward to an amazing career ahead.
