Latest recognition for disability studies expert
A new government committee appointment has been awarded to disability studies expert, Dr Miro Griffiths.
Dr Miro Griffiths, Lecturer in Social Policy and Disability Studies at the School of Sociology and Social Policy has been appointed to the UK Government Department for Transport Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee, providing advice to the government on the transport needs of disabled people's communities.
Miro responded, ‘I am honoured to have been appointed to the UK Government Department for Transport Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee. Improving accessibility in transportation for all disabled people is essential for realising inclusive societies.’
During my appointment, I intend to contribute to the development of innovative and inclusive transport solutions that truly meet the diverse needs of disabled people’s communities. I am committed to working collaboratively with the Committee and stakeholders to ensure that everyone can access safe, reliable, and affordable transportation.
This is Miro’s latest role in a succession of appointments in organisations, human rights institutions, and government departments to continue his work supporting disabled people's participation within society. These include: adviser to the UK Government Department of Health and Social Care and Department of Work and Pensions; adviser on disability hate crime to the European Commission; member of the Fairness and Social Justice Advisory Board within the Liverpool Combined Authority Region; former member of the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission Disability Advisory Committee; and former confidential and strategic UK Government advisor.
University of Liverpool 2024 Alumni Award
Dr Griffiths also recently received a University of Liverpool 2024 Alumni Award, which "celebrates the exceptional talent, dedication, and ambition of our alumni, who are making a significant impact on their fields, communities, and the world."
Miro has also recently been engaged in numerous media interviews and public advocacy work as a leading voice in the campaign against the legalisation of assisted dying.
His most recent research project, ‘Disability Activism in Europe: Young Disabled Activist’s Views and Experiences’ was co-funded by the Leverhulme Trust and concluded in 2024.
