Professor Rita de la Feria speaks at major international conference of tax experts
Professor Rita de la Feria spoke at a major international conference of tax experts organised by the UK’s Public Accounts Committee.
Rita highlighted that an overhaul of the international tax system is needed to crack down on aggressive tax avoidance, and that the rules which govern the system were designed in the 1920s and are no longer appropriate in the globalised and digitised world of today. She commented that the response has been a gradual spread of anti-avoidance measures, which in itself should be sufficient to indicate something is not right. She argued that the OECD’s BEPs project which targeted multinational tax avoidance can therefore only be a “temporary solution” which tackles the symptoms of the problem as a pose to the causes.
