Celebrating 20 Years of Opportunity: BA Social Science Foundation Year

On 13 May 2025 the University of Leeds welcomed alumni, students and staff (former and current) to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the BA Social Science Foundation Year.

Professor Paul Johnson, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Leeds, opened the event: “The reason why I think this is a fantastic event is because it celebrates a programme which is truly life changing and life enhancing, giving people a route into this brilliant university.”

“We celebrate this anniversary by making the pledge that we will maintain the programme; it's vital, as vital now as it was 20 years ago when it was started.”

Ms Suzanne Hallam and Professor Peter Dwyer who founded the BA Social Science programme added: “It's been a privilege to work on Foundation Year at the university, and it's been a privilege to work with the students” and “We were committed to widening access to people who maybe didn't think of the University of Leeds as a way to get into university... and to cut a long story short – it's been very successful. 1000 students is brilliant.”
