School of Law academic participates in prestigious conference in Poland

Dr Nazia Yaqub was invited to share her expertise at the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union Seminar on cross-border cooperation in family matters.

The seminar facilitated a robust exchange on jurisdictional conflicts, the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments, and the interaction between EU instruments and third-country legal systems.

Dr Yaqub’s research interests span international human rights law, including child rights, law and religion, family and immigration law. She says:

It was an honour to be invited as an expert to the Seminar on Cross-Border Cooperation in Family Matters , convened under the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Drawing on my academic specialisation in international family law, I contributed to discussions addressing the legal and procedural complexities arising in cases of international child abduction involving non-Hague jurisdictions.

Engagement with representatives of national competent authorities, including ministries of justice and related governmental bodies, underscored the critical importance of transnational cooperation and doctrinal clarity in ensuring the effective protection of children’s rights across borders.

The insights gained from this seminar will meaningfully inform future research, policy development, and legislative reform in the field of cross-border family law.
