Promoting PGR progress with Professor Rowena Murray
The School of Education recently welcomed Professor Rowena Murray to an audience of 19 late-stage PhD and EdD students on 13 May 2026.
Prof. Murray ran a Thesis Writing away day based on her influential research and book, How to Write a Thesis. In her second visit to the school in as many years, she provided a range of advice particularly around how to develop healthy writing habits, and improving the thesis writing style.
As an expert in academic writing and language, Prof. Murray is renowned for her work supporting doctoral researchers. In this workshop, she shared a range of strategies designed to help PGRs overcome common barriers in the writing process, particularly the challenge of becoming ‘unstuck’. Through practical techniques and motivational insights, she provided inspiration for making progress in writing the final thesis.
The session also complemented the School’s ongoing commitment to peer-led support. We host a regular PGR-led thesis writing group, offering a collaborative space for researchers to stay motivated and share experiences. Those interested in joining are encouraged to speak to their PGR representatives for further information.
