Zara Karim
- Course: BA (Hons) Childhood Studies
Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I am originally from Leeds and wanted to stay local as it was easier for me to gain relevant experience as there were many different places with children to work with here, e.g. youth clubs, crèches, primary schools and so on. Also I’m from a family of 5 so couldn’t stay away from home for so long! After my GCSEs, I completed my A-levels at sixth form and went straight to University as I knew I wanted to become a primary school teacher. I love the creativity and practicality in doing things and this was something I wanted to teach. I also enjoy art, travelling, cooking and having a good time!
What do you think of your course?
A particular highlight of my course was gaining knowledge on how primary schools work and about inclusion in education. This is something I often think about for when I become a teacher – to stimulate and allow a child to enjoy learning and being in school rather than just teaching them. Another main highlight of my course has been the development of my personal profile and how I can build on this to get to where I would like to be. This came from re-structuring my CV, and doing research on what options are available for me.
How would you describe the help and guidance provided by the staff within the School?
My personal tutor has been very helpful and responsive. If I have a problem with anything or was unsure about something I can contact her. In terms of wider support for lectures some modules I studied were very useful as they provided additional readings, essay structures and specific lessons aimed at the assignments.
Have you had the opportunity to study abroad, or complete a year in industry?
I’m currently studying in my second year and have planned to work in industry in the summer in Thailand. I have applied for the teaching in Thailand 9 week programme but waiting for my acceptance in March! I have heard great reviews and believe this opportunity will enhance my credibility for becoming a primary school teacher. I have considered doing the study abroad but was not sure to take the whole year out, so for now it’s a summer programme.
Have you been involved in extra-curricular activities, such as societies, summer placements etc?
I joined the ISOC (Islamic society) at the start of university as I felt it was great way to stay in touch with my cultural practises and meet other Muslim students from around the world. Amazing lecturers have shared their stories and events have taken place which has made my time at Leeds University a lot more memorable. So far it’s just the one society I have joined, and the university gym!
