CLER research to inform national discussion on literacy and educational transition

Professor Alice Deignan will present CLER research at the National Literacy Conference, exploring vocabulary transition and subject language demands to support pupils moving into secondary school.

Professor Alice Deignan, Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Centre for Language and Education Research (CLER), University of Leeds, will contribute to this year's National Literacy Conference, Leading literacy, leading change, organised by the National Literacy Trust. 

Professor Deignan will present alongside Marcus Jones, Literacy Lead at Huntington Research School, drawing on their recent research collaboration to explore how schools can support pupils as they move from primary to secondary education. 

Their contribution will showcase research into the language demands of secondary school subjects and consider how these findings can help teachers and school leaders support learners during this important stage of their educational journey. 

The conference brings together secondary education professionals from across the UK to share research, evidence-informed practice and approaches to literacy leadership. Professor Deignan's participation highlights the growing impact of CLER research on literacy, language and educational equity beyond the University. 

Professor Deignan and Marcus Jones are co-authors of New Words, New Meanings: Supporting the Vocabulary Transition from Primary to Secondary School, which examines the language challenges students face in the early years of secondary education and offers practical approaches to making curriculum language more accessible.
