Professor Neil Morris discusses the issues relating to the expansion of online education in universities as a result of COVID-19.
Professor Neil Morris, Chair in Educational Technology in the School of Education, has written a blog for the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) looking at the ‘Unbundled University’ research project which aims to explore a range of issues in relation to the expansion of online education in universities as a result of COVID-19.
Professor Morris, who contributed to the project, discusses the history of online provision in higher education and the five key themes that the project data identified.
These include the rapid expansion in online capabilities, the need for a clear online education strategy, the considerations when partnering with private companies, how you align with on-campus delivery, and the careful navigation involved in the commercialisation of teaching materials.
“Each university has its own mission and values which need to inform its online education strategy, and these values will place different weightings on the importance of financial drivers against other priorities.” Professor Morris said.
