The Harehills ESOL Needs Neighbourhood Audit project aimed to enhance understanding of the need for ESOL provision in Leeds, and the barriers faced by adult migrants in gaining access to such provision. The research was carried out through surveys and interviews with adult learners of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), their teachers, and other stakeholders. It also involved demographic survey work and ethnographic observation. Work on the project was carried out between November 2010 and May 2011.
Work on the project has now finished. As well as the project report, a methodological toolkit was also produced, which can be used to undertake similar work in other neighbourhoods. These documents, together with an executive summary and statistical annexes, are available on the Publications page.
Funding for the research was secured by the Regeneration Service of Leeds City Council from YoHrSpace, the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP) for Yorkshire and Humber, which is hosted by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber. The research was led by James Simpson at the School of Education, University of Leeds. Project team members are based at the University of Leeds, King's College London, and at RETAS, the Refugee Education Training Advice Service, Roundhay Road, Leeds.
