Competition for Visual Representations of Multilingualism is now open
Researchers from and linked to the School of Education at the University of Leeds have worked with colleagues across the country to create a Competition for Visual Representations of Multilingualism.
Jessica Bradley (TLANG doctoral researcher and now based at Leeds Trinity University) has contributed to developing the initiative on behalf of the AILA Research Network in Creative Inquiry and Applied Linguistics, which is co-convened with Lecturer in Language Education Dr Lou Harvey and Emilee Moore (former visiting scholar in the School of Education, now at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona).
The competition is a collaboration between the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL), CuratorSpace, publisher Multilingual Matters and the AILA Research Network. The judging panel includes Professor Abigail Harrison Moore, Head of the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, also at the University of Leeds.
This competition aims to provide a creative opportunity to explore new ways of representing multilingualism through visual means and to stimulate debate and raise awareness about innovative ways of thinking about multilingualism. It is part of BAAL's initiative to increase multilingual representation in BAAL and beyond. It aligns with the AILA network’s aims to develop new ways of working across linguistics and the arts, building on a body work developing in this area.

Deadline
Please submit works by Friday 29 March 2019, 11:59pm GMT
Winners will be chosen and all applicants will be notified of the outcome by early June 2019.
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to three winners at the BAAL conference at Manchester on 29-31 August, 2019.
First prize: £400
Second prize: £200
Third prize: £100
A number of works by selected applicants may also be included alongside the prize winners in an exhibition at the BAAL conference 2019.
