Professor Edward Newman

Profile

I teach, supervise and research in the area of international security studies, broadly defined. At present, I am focussing on intrastate armed conflict, including the impact of resource scarcity; and the dynamics and consequences of the transitional international order. I was Head of the Graduate School for the Faculty of Social Sciences between 2021 and 2023.

My published work has appeared in international journals including the British Journal of Criminology, Contemporary Security Policy, Energy Policy, Foreign Policy Analysis, Geopolitics, International Affairs (forthcoming), International Politics, International Studies Perspectives, Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of Global Security Studies, Terrorism and Political Violence, Review of International Studies, Security Dialogue, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, and Third World Quarterly, amongst others. My books have been published by Cambridge University Press (under contract, forthcoming), Palgrave, and Routledge. I am co-editor of the European Journal of International Security, a journal of the British International Studies Association published by Cambridge University Press; a founding Executive Editor of the International Relations of the Asia Pacific, a journal of the Japan Association of International Relations published by Oxford University Press; and founding coeditor of the Routledge Studies in Civil Wars and Intra-State Conflict book series. I am also a former editor of Civil Wars journal.

I have held visiting positions at Dublin City University, Waseda University, Tohoku University, and Tokyo University, and I have delivered guest lectures and collaborated with universities around the world.  In the past I spent almost a decade working at the United Nations University, based in Tokyo, where I was a Director of Research in the Peace and Governance Programme. I have also been a member of the Grant Assessment Panel of the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council.

Research interests

I work in international security studies, broadly defined. Within this field, my interests lie in a number of areas: theoretical security studies, including critical approaches and ‘human security’; intrastate armed conflict, civil war, intervention and political violence; international organizations and multilateralism; and peacebuilding and reconstruction in conflict-prone and post-conflict societies.

Student education

My teaching is mainly in the area of civil war and intrastate armed conflict, and in inter-disciplinary themes related to security and justice.

I am Programme Lead for the MA Global Security Challenges and Programme and Co-Lead for the MA Conflict, Peacebuilding and Development.

I have also been closely involved in doctoral training in connection with the White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership.
