Professor Duncan McCargo discusses voters’ motivation in Thailand’s recent elections
According to the military junta the charter is a milestone on the roadmap towards democracy, but in reality it tightens the armys grip on power to a degree not seen for several decades.
Professor Duncan McCargo, Professor of Political Science, at the University of Leeds, was quoted in an article on The World Weekly, titled: Land of smiles.
The article discusses the recent elections in Thailand and the results of the 20th incarnation referendum. Professor McCargo, was quoted in the article saying, “The majority of those who voted 'Yes' were voting in favour of promised elections, which the government has pledged to hold within 2017”. He continues that, “Many clearly hope that approval of the charter will lead back to a degree of political normalcy.”
