School of Law connects alumni and students in networking events

This past autumn, the School of Law alumni networking events provided students with invaluable insights and connections, highlighting diverse career paths and inspiring professional growth.

Last semester, the School of Law hosted two insightful alumni networking events, connecting current students with graduates thriving in diverse careers. These events underscored the invaluable opportunities they offer for students to learn about potential careers, gain practical advice, and expand their professional networks.

Careers outside the degree

On 7 November, students engaged with alumni who have leveraged their legal studies in non-traditional fields. Among the guests were Edoardo Calligaris, Private Secretary to the Chief Operating Officer at the Department for Business and Trade; Lucia Henry, Project Manager at the Department for Work and Pensions, and part of the Civil Service Fast Stream; Fraser Hicks, Senior Associate in Entity Governance & Compliance at PwC UK; Niamh McCotter, Assistant Commercial Manager at the Ministry of Justice; and Kate Moreton, Senior Associate at the Financial Conduct Authority.

Non-commercial law specialisations

On 3 December, the focus shifted to non-commercial legal careers, featuring alumni making an impact in areas like family, criminal, charity, mental health, and immigration law. Attendees included Liam Kelly, a family law barrister at Deans Court Chambers, Manchester, and 5 St Andrew’s Hill, London; Sam Magee, a criminal law barrister at St John's Buildings, London; Charlotte Nutt, an associate specialising in charity law at VWV, Birmingham; Leah Winstanley, a solicitor focused on mental health and Court of Protection law at MJC Law, Leeds; and Juno Worsdell (2022), a paralegal specialising in immigration law at Laura Devine Immigration, London.

Alumni and Communications Officer at the School of Law, Loren Sandoval Arteaga, emphasised the importance of these events:

Networking with alumni broadens students’ horizons, offering them insight into diverse career possibilities while fostering connections that can shape their professional futures. We’re delighted to see these interactions spark curiosity and open new pathways for our students.
