Dr Nick Cartwright begins Visiting Professorship at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria
This new academic appointment marks the start of an exciting new phase of international collaboration.
The Visiting Professorship will enable Nick to build relationships with a leading Global South institution, and will open opportunities for joint research, teaching contributions, and knowledge exchange.
It will enable deeper, longer‑term collaboration on themes such as justice, equity, and community‑based approaches to legal education, and it will showcase the School of Law’s commitment to working in partnership with universities across different regions of the world.
Nick will be allied to the Department of Private and Property Law. Nick has an MPhil in biomedical law and ethics and he will be delivering a guest lecture on biomedical law and ethics to students studying healthcare law.
During the Visiting Professorship, Nick aims to deepen his scholarship on community‑engaged legal education by developing collaborative research with colleagues at the University of Ibadan on how justice and equity can be embedded in both curriculum design and legal practice.
He will use the visit to explore how community law clinics – including the university’s Women's Law Clinic – operate within different cultural and regulatory contexts, with a view to co‑producing new pedagogical approaches that centre marginalised voices and expand students’ understanding of law’s social purpose.
A further aim is to build sustainable partnerships that support joint publications, staff exchange, and future student opportunities, strengthening the School of Law’s global engagement and its commitment to socially responsive legal education.
Nick says:
I’m delighted to begin this new Visiting Professorship. It offers a meaningful opportunity to build genuine partnerships with colleagues in the Global South and to learn from the rich intellectual traditions that shape their approaches to justice and education. I’m excited for the conversations, the collaboration, and the shared knowledge that this appointment will make possible.
This new Visiting Professorship reflects both recognition of Nick’s work, and a strategic opportunity to enhance Leeds’ international connections, advancing research and teaching in collaboration with a prominent Global South university.
