Student Spotlight: Alex Rollinson wins prestigious Middle Temple Access to the Bar Award

Alex Rollinson, a second-year Law student at Leeds, has won the prestigious Middle Temple Access to the Bar Award, gaining invaluable legal experience through mini-pupillage and judge marshalling.
From Hull to the Bar
Originally from Hull, East Yorkshire, Alex is currently pursuing a three-year Law degree. His decision to study Law was driven by a long-standing ambition to become a barrister, coupled with a passion for critical thinking and legal analysis. “Law is a highly respected degree that challenges you to think independently and analytically,” he says.
The University of Leeds stood out to Alex for its academic excellence and impressive facilities.
The Liberty Building really impressed me on the open day – it reflects the university’s commitment to legal education.
Life beyond lectures
Alex is an active member of several student societies, including the Film, Snooker, Boxing, and Coffee Societies. However, it’s the Leeds Law Society that has had the most profound impact on his university experience.
In his first year, Alex entered the Society’s annual debate competition – his first foray into public speaking. “I was incredibly nervous, but I discovered a real passion for advocacy. Drafting and delivering speeches became a creative outlet for me.” His efforts paid off when he won first place in the competition.
Since then, Alex has taken on mooting and joined the Law Society’s Debate Subcommittee, where he now helps others develop their public speaking skills.
I really enjoyed the fact that newcomers to debating improved their public speaking skills, and found enjoyment in the competition.
Earning the Middle Temple Access to the Bar Award
Alex’s recent success in securing the Middle Temple Access to the Bar Award is a testament to his dedication and potential. As the first in his family to attend university, he values the award’s mission to support students from non-traditional backgrounds. “The legal sector can be difficult to access without networks or financial stability. I am grateful that Middle Temple encourages social mobility and diverse voices at the Bar.”
I was delighted to write a reference for Alex’s Middle Temple Award application. Alex is an exceptionally dedicated and capable student, and I had every confidence that he would make a strong impression. It’s wonderful to see his potential recognised with this well-deserved award.
Alex encourages future applicants to get involved in extracurriculars that demonstrate a commitment to the Bar – such as debating, mooting, and court visits – and to prepare thoroughly for the interview. “Try not to be descriptive - tell the interviewers why the advocate was effective; this demonstrates to the panel that you will engage effectively if given a mini-pupillage and marshalling.”
“Middle Temple asked me to tell them about a piece of advocacy I watched that impressed me. Before the interview, I anticipated this question, and I wrote down the details of an advocate’s performance that I remembered.
Additionally, a mock interview is very helpful - it made me realise that some of my answers were mediocre, and some were good. The employability team at the Law School are fantastic, so prepare for the interview with them.
Why choose Leeds?
“Studying Law at the University of Leeds has had an undeniable positive impact upon my development, not just as a student, but also as a person. The university has supported my aspirations every step of the way, and the Leeds Law School has excellent teaching, support and facilities. Alongside your studies, the Leeds Law Society provides the opportunity to participate in annual competitions and learn from practicing barristers in panel talks – with the added bonus of the many socials arranged year round.”
Studying Law is not always easy, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the University of Leeds to any student considering a legal career.
Alex aspires to become a barrister, with a particular interest in criminal law. “I’m drawn to the persuasive oration involved, but I’m open to exploring different areas as I progress.”
