Between Trust and Risk: Volunteering in Criminal Justice

The work of volunteers in criminal justice can be complex, sensitive and demanding.

The expansion of voluntary organisations in the penal services economy, however, has brought to the fore several questions about the responsibilities and boundaries of voluntary agencies more generally, and the behaviour of volunteers in particular. The paper will consider how building trust between volunteers and offenders is often framed by dominant discourses of risk management, which categorise their relationships as potentially risky. It will consider how or whether these might be reconciled.
