Deliberating Desistance: Tales of Compliance Among Convicted Sex Offenders

Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to examine how sex offenders negotiate barriers and temptations to not only comply with statutory regulations (ie. the sex offender register) but to also achieve ‘victories of self control’.
The paper also explores some of the narratives used by sex offenders as they attempt to rejoin society after receiving their conviction for a sexual offence.
The paper will rely on data from a recently completed empirical study which involved interviews with 30 convicted sex offenders who were participating or had participated in a Circle of Support and Accountability.
The paper will draw on a range of criminological concepts including compliance, desistance, identity and self-control to facilitate in interpreting the data.
