Frank Dawtry Memorial Lecture

Keith Humphreys is the Esther Ting Memorial Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University and an Honorary Professor of Psychiatry at Kings' College London.

He has studied addiction and its consequences for over 35 years and has testified about drug and crime related issues in the US Congress and the Parliaments of Canada and the UK. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II made him an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire to recognize his contributions to addiction science and services in Britain.

When policymakers develop strategies to tackle drugs and crime, they frequently overlook the fact that alcohol is a drug and contributes more to crime than even the most widely used illicit drugs. This lecture explains why this blind spot matters, what political forces maintain it, and how the crime, violence, disorder, and poor health caused by alcohol could be significantly reduced both by population level strategies as well as individual level strategies focused on criminal offenders who have drink problems.

All welcome. This is a free event, though registration is required.
