Caroline Gooding Memorial Lecture: Inclusive Equality

The School of Law is delighted to announce the annual Caroline Gooding Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Prof. Theresia Degener.

The Centre for Disability Studies (University of Leeds) and the Centre for Law and Social Justice (School of Law) are delighted to announce the annual Caroline Gooding Memorial Lecture 2018. The Lecture will be delivered by Prof. Theresia Degener who currently chairs the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and will take place at 14:00 on Wednesday 3rd October 2018.

Abstract

The lecture will focus on inclusive equality as a new equality concept introduced by General Comment No 6 on equality and non discrimination which was  adopted by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in March 2018. It will explain how inclusive equality differs from substantive and formal equality concepts in anti-discrimination law and how these equality models correspond to various models of disability. The purpose of the lecture is to show how this new concept of equality can be leveraged to implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It builds on the contribution of Caroline Gooding to the new civil rights history.
