School of Law Postgraduate Researcher and alumnus win Kamran Arif Memorial Award

The Award is in memory of Mr Kamran Arif, advocate and a renowned human rights activist who sadly passed away in 2021.

School of Law Postgraduate Researcher Hajer Almanea and alumnus Ahmed Almutawa have been awarded the Kamran Arif Memorial Award for their article “Analyses of non-compliance to legislation by signatories to the Arab Charter of Human Rights: a framework for national observance and regional enforcement” published in The Asian Yearbook of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Volume: 6 (the Publication date: 20 Oct 2022)

The article was selected by the Committee of Editors of the Asian Yearbook of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law as the best article of the year and the authors will receive a certificate signed by the editor-in-chief and books worth £200 from Brill Publishers.

I am proud of this participation as my first published academic research during my Ph.D. This award is a great incentive for me to do more academic research and further motivation for the future. I am thankful for this experience, working with Dr. Ahmed was a great chance to learn from him.

HAJER ALMANEA

Hajer Almanea is supervised by the School of Law’s Emeritus Professor Clive Walker and the School of Politics and International Studies’ Dr James Worrall and her thesis title is “The Role of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the Protection of Human Rights”.

Dr Ahmed Almutawa told us “As a doctoral alumnus of the University of Leeds School of Law, I am delighted to announce that, along with my co-author Hajer Almanea, I have been awarded the Kamran Arif Annual award for ‘best article of the year’ by the editors of the Asian Yearbook of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. The article, which is published in the 2022 Yearbook (volume 6), examines the noncompliance of national legislation with the Arab Charter of Human Rights. I am indebted to my PhD supervisors Professors Clive Walker and Henry Yeomans for their guidance, which undoubtedly helped me to improve my research and academic writing skills.
