Postgraduate researcher leads workshop at AEA-Europe Annual Conference

In November 2025, School of Education postgraduate researcher Marianne Talbot attended the AEA-Europe Annual Conference in The Hague.

During the conference, Marianne co-led a pre-conference workshop and presented a poster showcasing one case study which is part of her doctoral research.

The workshop ‘Exploring feedback dialogues for a transformative feedback culture’ was led in collaboration with Sam Passeport (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam/No Borders Learning), Constanze Hopfner (Tilburg University), Nathalie Younès (University of Clermont-Auvergne), and Andrew Watts (University of Cambridge).

Collaborating with them across several months of 2025 as we developed the workshop was hugely enjoyable – a lot of work, yes, but really valuable in terms of so-called ‘soft’ skills, as well as deepening my technical knowledge and understanding of relational feedback dialogues.

Marianne’s poster, entitled ‘Participant ecologies: how the unique ecology of every individual affects their engagement with and responses to my research questions about the impact of qualifying as a Chartered Educational Assessor’, showcased a case study which forms part of the findings from her doctoral research.

Of presenting her poster, Marianne said:

“I made my one-minute poster pitch in a hall full of 400 delegates on the opening morning of the conference; it was not quite as nerve-wracking as I expected – I was well-prepared and knew my poster content and related subject matter inside out. It is one discipline distilling lots of information into the poster format, it is quite another further distilling it into a 60-second ‘hook’! But a fun and worthwhile exercise…

AEA offers a student membership rate of just €45, which is a bargain, offering access to Special Interest Group membership (including one for PGRs and ECRs), webinars, blogs, and an excellent discount on conference attendance. This year’s conference will be held in Rome towards the end of November, which I hope to attend, maybe leading another pre-conference workshop and/or presenting a paper outlining the overall findings from my doctoral research.”
