Spotlight on Teacher Training

Thinking about a career in teaching? Join us to find out more about postgraduate routes into teaching and to meet with representatives from Red Kite Teacher Training and Teach First.

Throughout the day, you'll have the opportunity to attend free workshops led by Red Kite Teacher Training and Teach First, who will introduce you to different postgraduate routes into teaching, the value of school experience and how to arrange this, teaching different subjects and age groups, and how to make an application to your chosen teacher training provider.

Workshops are free to attend, although places are limited so advance booking is recommended.

Workshops

10:30 - Routes into Teaching (30 mins)
University of Leeds Careers Centre, Room LG.03

This workshop will explain the different postgraduate routes into teaching including: Higher Education Institution (HEI), School Direct, School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) and Teach First. Join us to find out more about entry requirements, how to apply, course timings, how the courses are assessed and the qualifications they lead to. There is another chance to attend this workshop at 13:30.

11:15 - Application Help and Guidance (Red Kite Teacher Training) (30 mins)

This workshop will explain the process of applying for a place with School Direct and School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) provider Red Kite Teacher Training. In this session you'll receive advice about making an application via the UCAS system and how to approach your personal statement. You'll also find out more about the value of gaining school experience, how to arrange it and what to look for during your experience.

This workshop will explain the process of applying for a place with Teach First and will provide advice about how to approach your personal statement. You'll also find out more about the value of gaining school experience, how to arrange it and what to look for during your experience.

12:45 - Teaching Maths and Science (30 mins)
University of Leeds Careers Centre, Room LG.03

This workshop is for Maths or Science related degree students in any year, who may be interested in a career in teaching. The workshop will cover salaries and bursaries available for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teacher training, ways to get school experience and STEM internships. We will also cover the secondary curriculum and subject knowledge requirements for teacher training and course structure for the Red Kite Teacher Training and Teach First routes.

13:30 - What is Teacher Training Really Like? (30 mins)

This workshop is will be led by Trainee teachers who are currently training with Red Kite Teacher Training. They will talk about their experiences of applying for teacher training, sharing hints and tips. They will also describe what they have been doing on the course since September to give a flavour of whether to expect and what to think about when choosing your teacher training course.
