Duncan McCargo interviewed on BBC Radio 4

Professor of South East Asian Politics, Duncan McCargo, explains why the current political unrest in Thailand is proving persistent.

McCargo highlights that opposition parties to the present government in Thailand are now beginning to turn their back on electoral democracy. Remarkably however, this ‘rally mode’ does not seem to have effected Thailand’s economic or social networks – a feature similar to previous political protests within Thailand.

Professor McCargo also offers further comment in an article about Thailand’s former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban. He concludes that despite the shortcomings of the present government, there is no legitimate basis for protesters to oust it by force.
