EU Referendum; What's In A Question?

A referendum will be held on the 23rd of June. Voters will decide whether they want the United Kingdom to remain part of the European Union.

In case you missed it, there's a referendum taking place in Britain on the 23rd of June. Eligible voters will decide whether they want the United Kingdom to remain part of the European Union.

Britain joined the European Community in 1973. In 1975, there was a referendum to determine whether the UK should remain a part of the then European Common Market. The question was: Do you think that the United Kingdom should stay in the European Community (the Common Market)?, which permitted a simple yes/no answer.

41 years later, after much debate, voters will be asked 'Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?', and voters will be permitted a remain/stay answer.

Dr Victoria Honeyman visited BBC Radio Leeds discuss the importance of the way the 2016 EU referendum ballot paper has been phrased.
