How Parliament Scrutinizes Economic Issues

The School of Politics and International Studies hosted 'Pounds, Pence and Politics: How Parliament scrutinises economic issues' on Thursday 3rd March.

The panel consisted of Rachel Reeves, Member of Parliament for Leeds West, former Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, member of the House of Commons Treasury Committee, Ayeesha Waller, Clerk to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, Mike Cartwright, Policy and Representation Executive for the West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and the Bradford Chamber of Commerce, and was chaired by Professor Cristina Leston-Bandeira, Professor of Politics at the University of Leeds.

This event was part of the Perspectives on Parliament series of events. These events are designed to give an understanding of Parliament's people, processes, offices, history and culture.

Attendees were given insights in to the thoughts of an MP with significant experience of scrutinising the work of the Treasury, the ways in which committees in both Houses of Parliament examine a range of economic issues, and the insights of an experienced regional campaigner with significant experience of working with Parliament and government on a variety of policies relevant to the Yorkshire economy.
