The crony capitalism and deeply rooted patronage networks within the Western Cape of South Africa have been further evidenced following the recent implosion of the ANC, in addition to a letter by Truman Prince, ANC mayor of Beaufort West, illegally soliciting funds from the Construction Education and Training Authority for the party’s 2016 election campaign.
This has led to bitter factional divisions being created within the movement, hindering its capacity to effect socio-economic transformation. It is such behaviour of the party, writes Dr Alexander Beresford, a specialist in African politics at the University of Leeds, which poses threat to the quality of South African democracy.
