Faculty academics and alum represented at Africa Week

Academics from the Faculty of Social Sciences host an event to celebrate Africa Week.

Exploring the strengths, diversity and impact of African scholars, organisations and partnerships, Africa Week provides space for debate and discussion on open education and knowledge exchange systems, led and informed by African scholars and researchers.

The conference is hosted through a collaboration of researchers, partners and practitioners, including the University's Centre for African Studies (LUCAS),  Yorkshire African Studies Network (YASN), Cultural Institute, Africa Strategy Group and Leeds University Union.

Africa Week features a stimulating day of networks, an edit-a-thon to raise the profile of information about Africa's rich history and the screening of a powerful film on Africa Day itself.

Lecturer in International Development Dr Winnie Bedigen at the School of Politics and International Studies and Associate Professor of Sociology Dr Abel Ugba at the School of Sociology and Social Policy will co-chair Yorkshire African Studies Network (YASN) Zoom Event on ‘Global Security, Global Africa’ (Tuesday 20 May, 10.00am-1.15pm).

Register for the ‘Global Security, Global Africa’ event here.

Celebrating Leeds’ Black alumni

For the event, the University of Leeds has commissioned a series of videos showcasing Black alumni, including the Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung who pursued a masters degree in Development Studies at the School of Politics and International Studies in 2000.

Reading List

The University's Library team has curated a collection for Africa Week which includes more than 1500 of our books, films, magazines, journals and music recordings from African authors, creators, and publishers across a range of topics and disciplines. View the collection or browse selected titles from the display on the ground floor of the Laidlaw Library.

The collection includes a reading list to showcase the collaboration between researchers from the University of Leeds and researchers, universities, and other organisations across Africa, including several works from the Faculty of Social Sciences.
