POLIS at COP28: Head of School writes about The Fossil Fuel COP

Having attended COP28 as part of the University of Leeds delegation, Professor Richard Beardsworth reflects on the centrality of fossil fuels to the most recent COP.

In his extended interview, ‘What can we expect at COP28?’, Professor Beardsworth discussed the international politics which were expected to direct the progress of decisions made regarding the reduction of usage of fossil fuels.

Having been part of the University’s delegation in Dubai for COP28 between 30 November – 13 December 2023, he now reflects on the central significance of the fossil fuel debate at the conference, by writing a reflective article on what he terms ‘The Fossil Fuel COP’.

Professor Beardsworth writes about the complex international politics that influence the decisions made at COP, and considers the fossil fuel question in the context of the planet’s increasing temperature and the Global Stocktake.
