Dr Kaisa Hinkkainen attends Alan Turing Institute Data Study Group
Dr Kaisa Hinkkainen, Academic Fellow in Security Studies, has attended an Alan Turing Institute Data Study Group.
The Turing Data Study Group took place 11 - 15 December 2017 at the Alan Turing Institute in London, where the selected participants chose one of the five data science challenges set by the partner organisations.
In November it was announced that the University is set to become an official partner of the national data science institute. This partnership, led through the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA), will enable applications to the Turing Data Study Group from researchers interested in data science and extremism, thus reflecting the research strengths in POLIS, both in political violence and quantitative methods.
Dr Kaisa Hinkkainen took part in the Cabinet Office challenge on whether data science can help in identifying potential drivers of extremism. The week involved working in interdisciplinary teams and in collaboration with the Cabinet Office representatives in analysing the available data on extremism. This allowed data science academics to work with real-world datasets, in multi-disciplinary teams and with partner organisations to produce a potentially important policy impact.
