EISA Best Article in European Journal of International Relations 2017

Head of School Professor Jason Ralph and Dr Jess Gifkins (University of Manchester) have won the EISA Best Article in European Journal of International Relations 2017.

European Journal of International Relations (EJIR) publishes peer review content across the whole of International Relations and reflects global subjects and cutting-edge theory debates. EJIR has become a major independent voice in the worldwide scholarly debates about international relations.

The article entitled, ‘The purpose of United Nations Security Council practice: Contesting competence claims in the normative context created by the Responsibility to Protect’ draws on extensive interview material to offer an alternative account of the Libya intervention. It finds that the practices of the permanent three (France, the UK and the US) did not cultivate the kind of collective consciousness that is required to implement the Responsibility to Protect.
