Academy of Social Sciences honour for POLIS professor

A University of Leeds professor has been made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Caroline Dyer, Professor of Education and International Development in the School of Politics and International Studies, has been announced as one of 40 social scientists awarded a Fellowship in the Academy’s autumn cohort. 

The Academy of Social Sciences said the newly elected Fellows are ‘highly accomplished individuals recognised for excellence in their fields and their wider contributions to the social sciences for public benefit’. 

The Academy of Social Sciences is delighted to welcome an excellent range of highly distinguished social scientists to join our ranks - as the work of social science become ever more important. We look forward to engaging with them in our work.

The newly conferred fellows were praised for making ‘exceptional efforts’ to tackle urgent issues in the UK in areas including the economy, communities, the environment, places and more. They have been drawn from varied backgrounds, disciplines and institutions from across Britain and overseas.  

Professor Dyer said she was ‘delighted and honoured’ to have been made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Perhaps now more than ever, the Academy’s remit - of promoting understanding of our contemporary human world through social sciences, and championing social sciences themselves – is absolutely vital.

Professor Dyer added: “It’s a special honour to have been nominated by the British Association of International and Comparative Education, in recognition of my research into educational policy, service provision, and the marginalisation of nomadic communities.

“Being made a Fellow gives me a fantastic opportunity to draw on my experience to contribute leadership to the collective effort of making meaning around education’s role in ‘sustainable’ global development. I’m really looking forward to it!”

All Academy Fellows are conferred following independent and robust peer review by the Academy’s Nominations Committee. They are selected on the basis of the substantial contributions they have made to policy and practice, and for going above and beyond the normal requirements of their roles. 

The Academy said: “We warmly welcome them to the Academy and look forward to working with them in future to champion the social sciences and deepen understanding of their vital role in shaping our contemporary human world.”
