Dr David Rowlands

Profile

I am a Research Fellow at the ESRC Vulnerability and Policing Research Centre engaged in research concerning the policing of vulnerable groups and how the police, in collaboration with other organisations, can better serve vulnerable populations.

Within the Centre, I am currently involved in a project, led by Professor Adam Crawford, mapping vulnerabilities and service priovision for vulnerable populations across Bradford, and project exploring minimum policing standards and policing vulnerabilities led by Professor Ben Bradford (UCL). 

Research interests

I joined the University of Leeds in May 2022. Previously, I was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Hull, involved in research on interventions for domestic abuse, and Keele Policing Academic Collaboration (KPAC) at Keele University, where I led on a project exploring police disproportionality in collaboration with Staffordshire Police.

I obtained my PhD in 2019 from the University of Hudderfield, conducting narrative research to explore identity processes in recovery from substance misuse.

Prior to this, I worked as a substance misuse practitioner, collaborating with the police and other organisations to coordinate multiagency interventions for substance-using offenders.  

This research and practice background informs my current research interests in public health-based policing and the role of identity processes in criminality and compliance.
