Ilaria Zavoli Wins Prize for Best Paper at the Southern Law PhD Conference

On 1 May 2015, Ilaria Zavoli, a PhD student, won the prize for the best paper at the Southern Law PhD Conference 2015, which was held at the University of Portsmouth.

Ms Zavoli presented a paper entitled "Waiting for Godot": Solutions for International Criminal Proceedings with an Absent Defendant. This paper focused on the concept of in absentia criminal proceedings in International Criminal Justice. Specifically, Ms Zavoli’s paper discussed solutions for international criminal proceedings with an absent defendant, taking into account the main issues at stake and proposing three alternatives to trials in absentia.

Ms Zavoli is currently pursuing a PhD on the topic of in absentia proceedings in International Criminal Justice. Her supervisors are Dr Peter Whelan and Dr Amrita Mukherjee, both of whom are based in the School of Law.
