Dr Sarah Brown has been invited to give a contextual address at the Westminster Business Forum Keynote Seminar on ‘Consumer Credit in the UK – next steps for standards, competition and consumer protection’. The event is taking place on 5th July in Central London with the keynote speech begin given by Philip Salter, Director of Retail Lending, Supervision Division, Financial Conduct Authority.

The  seminar is timed to consider the Financial Conduct Authority’s current credit card market study and will also consider

  • latest thinking on promoting market competition, and options for developing safeguards for consumers in persistent levels of debt;
  • High-cost short-term credit: the impact of rules on affordability, advertising, rollovers and the use of continuous payment authorities, and their long-term impact on the sector;
  • Next steps for standards and conduct: perspectives on current reviews into early arrears management, as well as the use of staff remuneration and incentives across the sector;
  • Debt management and advice: recent thinking on reducing the effects of income shocks, as well as protecting consumer data during sale of debt management firms.
