Expanding Global Horizons: Leeds Law Students Begin Studies in Budapest

The University of Leeds School of Law launches a new study abroad partnership with ELTE Law School in Budapest, opening affordable and academically rich opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe.

A Milestone Partnership for Leeds Law

The School of Law at the University of Leeds has achieved a significant internationalisation milestone with the launch of a new study abroad partnership at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) Faculty of Law in Budapest. Formalised in the late academic year 2024/25, this agreement marks the first law-specific exchange arrangement between the two institutions and in the Central and Eastern European region.

Securing this partnership involved close collaboration between the School of Law and the University’s Study Abroad Office. The outcome is a bespoke opportunity designed to enhance the global legal education experience offered to Leeds students.

Welcoming the First Leeds Cohort in Budapest

The inaugural cohort of two Leeds Law students commenced their year abroad studies at ELTE Law in September 2025. Their participation marks the beginning of a sustained international exchange that will benefit future generations of legal scholars.

One current outgoing student, Margaux Collins, expressed her enthusiasm:

Budapest is a beautiful, vibrant city, and the ELTE Law School has been so welcoming and kind. I have been able to study a wide range of interesting modules that would not be available to me in Leeds.

Rich Academic Experience in a Premier Central European Institution

ELTE Law stands out as one of the most prestigious legal education providers in Central and Eastern Europe. Its undergraduate law programme spans five years, which enables the faculty to offer a wide catalogue of specialist modules. Leeds Law students will have the opportunity to select from approximately fifty English-language modules, providing both depth and breadth in legal education.

The university also has more than twenty years of experience participating in the ERASMUS Programme, which has contributed to well-developed academic support structures and a diverse international student community.

Affordable Study Abroad in a New Geographic Region

This partnership introduces a cost-effective international academic experience in a region previously unavailable to Leeds Law undergraduates. Students will benefit not only from enriching study options but also from the cultural and professional exposure that comes with living in the dynamic European capital of Budapest.
