Freddie Halkon’s journey in law and music

Meet Freddie Halkon, a second-year LLB student at the School of Law, who’s balancing his passion for law with his growing music career.

Freddie Halkon, a second-year law student at the University of Leeds, is demonstrating that academic and creative pursuits can go hand in hand. Originally from Haxey, South Yorkshire, he is balancing his law studies with a growing music career, showing that university life extends beyond the classroom.

A love for law and music

Freddie’s interest in law began when he studied it at college, where he was drawn to the analytical side of the subject. After shadowing a family friend who worked as a criminal barrister, Freddie decided to study law at university, with Leeds being his top choice because of its strong reputation and the vibrant city life. He quickly fell in love with the wide variety of law modules offered, like Youth Crime and Justice, which allow him to dive into topics that genuinely interest him.

At the same time, Freddie has been interested in music from a young age. He’s been playing guitar and singing since he was seven years old. Although he doesn’t come from a musical family, Freddie’s love for music grew naturally, and he’s always been more about playing by ear than reading music.

A rising star

In 2023, things started to take off for Freddie in the music world. He was given the chance to support The Reytons at a sold-out gig at The Leadmill in Sheffield. The performance caught the attention of the band’s lead singer and manager, who now help manage Freddie’s music career. Most recently, Freddie joined The Reytons on their UK tour, playing in front of thousands of people.

I never imagined this would happen while studying law, but here I am, living two completely different lives. It’s tough, but it’s also amazing. I’m just excited to see where both my legal and music careers take me!

Balancing his studies and a growing music career

Balancing law school with a music career is no easy feat, especially when Freddie’s weekends are filled with gigs. But he’s managed to stay on top of his studies while chasing his musical dreams, thanks to his excellent time-management skills.

“Most of my tour dates are on weekends, so it doesn’t really clash with my lectures,” he explains. “But it can be tricky switching from performing in front of thousands to getting my head in the game for an exam. It’s definitely a challenge, but it’s also what makes it so exciting!”

Looking to the future

As Freddie gears up for his own UK headline tour in April 2025, he’s also excited to finish his law degree. He’s even planning to explore the important connection between law and music in his dissertation.

The future is all about balancing law and music. I’m looking forward to what both paths bring, and I’m just enjoying the ride.
