Dr Ali Malik, who will join the University of Leeds School of Law in May 2023, has written a piece for The Conversation titled “Police Scotland: the UK’s second-largest force is also grappling with misogyny and racism” following the publishing of the Casey Report.

The Casey Report, written by Baroness Casey, was published in March 2023 and covers her independent review (began in February 2022) of the Met Police’s culture and standards of behaviour. She was appointed to lead the review by the former Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, Dame Cressida Dick, following the kidnap, rape, and murder of Sarah Everard by then-serving Met Police officer Wayne Couzens.

Police forces across the UK need to tackle racism, misogyny and bullying within their ranks.

DR ALI MALIK

The Casey report, Dr Malik writes, “found the UK’s largest police force rife with ill-treatment of women, ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ officers. Louise Casey found London’s Metropolitan Police to be “institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic”, and recommended radical reform – or breaking up the Met.

“Police Scotland, the UK’s second-largest force, may not face a crisis in public trust and confidence of the same scale. But it is not immune to the Casey review’s findings. Scottish policing has a history of complacency concerning equality, diversity and inclusion.”
