Dr Jack Meakin launches new blog series on ‘Labour, Strategy, and Legal Mobilisation’

The series brings together a range of voices and insights on the strategic use of law by trade unions and workers in the course of industrial relations campaigns.

The School of Law’s Dr Jack Meakin has launched a new blog series with the Institute of Employment Rights (IER) on 'Labour, Strategy, and Legal Mobilisation'. The series brings together a range of voices and insights on the strategic use of law by trade unions and workers in the course of industrial relations campaigns. 

The purpose of this new IER blog series is to shed light on the ways that law is mobilised at work, the role of courts and their capacity to redress workplace grievances, and the broader role of law in industrial relations.<br><br> In order to grasp the potential and effects of law in this context, and to comprehend why unions have opted to mobilise its resources, this blog series presents a range of insights and perspectives on the strategic use of law and its capacity (or not) to realise worker-protective labour law reforms. 

Published contributors to the series currently include: leading employment law barrister Lord Hendy KC, who was described by Chambers & Partners 2019 as “A go-to barrister for trade unions and one of the foremost experts in the area of industrial relations”, Dr Jamie Woodcock (senior lecturer at the University of Essex), and Alex Marshall, President of Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB).  

In August 2022 Dr Meakin launched his Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) New Investigator Grant funded project. The project is titled “TRACTION: Transnational Labour Constitutionalism. A study of the effectiveness of strategic litigation in supranational courts, transnational legal orders, and the constitutional protection of work”.
