Dr Phillip Wadds will present: ‘It’s my right to enjoy myself and not have somebody try and take that away from me’: Exploring Carnival and Sexual Violence at Australian Music Festivals.
About the speaker
Dr Phillip Wadds is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of New South Wales. His research is situated at the intersection of four interrelated themes: (1) policing; (2) nightlife and related leisure; (3) alcohol and other drugs (AOD); and (4) violence. Recently, Dr Wadds has led world-first research into issues of public safety and sexual violence at Australian music festivals.
Completed with Dr Bianca Fileborn and Professor Stephen Tomsen, this project examined the specific socio-cultural, spatial and gendered dynamics of music festivals as sites of particular risk relating to sexual violence and AOD-related harm.
This research follows on from a number of other projects related to policing and violence in the night-time economy that Phillip has been involved with over the past decade, and which will be the focus of a forthcoming monograph to be published by Routledge in 2020.
