Police Community Support Officers: Walking a Thin Blue Line

This CCJS Public Seminar will be delivered by Dr Megan O’Neill, University of Dundee.

Dr O’Neill is a Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Dundee and a member of the Scottish Institute for Policing Research.  She is the Chair of the Policing Network for the British Society of Criminology and has published several articles and books on policing topics such as police culture, partnership working in the public sector and Black Police Associations.

Abstract

This seminar analyses the findings of a recent Leverhulme Research Fellowship project, which was an observational study of PCSOs from two northern English police forces. It will examine (among other things) how PCSOs negotiate the often conflicting demands of the community and the police, the methods and skills they have adopted to do this and their relationships with police officers, the public and each other. It will also consider what can be learned from the project about police culture, neighbourhood policing and building trust with communities.
