Co-POWeR: Exposing the Hidden Stories of the Pandemic – part of The 2022 Festival of Social Science

You are invited to join this workshop on Co-POWeR’s 18-month research about the impact of COVID-19 and racial discrimination on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Families and Communities in the UK.​

What’s on offer?

A short animation film illustrates the research findings of Co-POWeR's 18-month research on the impact of COVID-19 on the BAME families and communities in the UK.

The animation presents the findings of the five interdisciplinary work packages that the research covered and highlights the issues faced by BAMFC, followed by a 45-minute panel discussion on this topic by researchers and Co-POWeR community engagement members.

What’s it about?

2020 was a difficult year for most people, especially for families in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities. The Covid-19 pandemic exposed what wasn’t working in our healthcare and social systems - the combination of experiences of people in Black, Asian and minority ethnic families and communities during the pandemic was devastating. Fear of infection, being admitted to hospital, and death, combined with anxiety about job losses, over-policing, isolation and loneliness, as well as worry about the lack of access to care, food, education, and leisure facilities placed enormous stress on these communities. And in addition, the information communicated to the public was exclusive – for example, it did not consider the language needs of racially minoritized communities.
